Privacy Notice

The short version: Town Regular collects what it takes to run an account and a local board — your email, a handle, what you post and vote on, and the location you choose — and nothing for advertising. No trackers, no analytics, no selling or sharing your information. Your handle and your posts are public; your email is not shown anywhere. Questions go to [email protected].
Town Regular is operated by Town Regular LLC, a limited liability company registered in Ohio, which is the company this notice speaks for.
What we collect, and why
When you make an account
- Your email address — to sign you in and to send the handful of messages an account needs (below). It is never displayed on the site.
- Your password — stored only as a hash by the sign-in service we use; we never see it. Before it is accepted it is checked against a list of commonly breached passwords, without being sent anywhere.
- A handle — the name that appears on everything you post. This one is public.
- Optionally, your name and a phone number. Both are for you: the name is shown to you in your account menu, and the phone number is stored as you typed it, not verified, and not used to text you — nothing on Town Regular sends texts today. You can leave both blank.
- Your home town (city, state, ZIP) and whether you want the site to use your device location — so the board opens centered where you live.
- Two notification switches (email and push) that are saved but not yet acted on: there is no sender behind them today, and when one exists it will be opt-in with an unsubscribe link in every message.
When you use it
- What you post — deals, activities and comments, each carrying your handle and the time. Public by design; that is what the board is.
- Your votes and “outdated” marks. The totals are shown on each post. Who voted is not shown to anyone.
- Reports you file — the reason, any note you add, and that it was you. Only moderators see reports, and nobody can list them from outside.
- A moderation record if your account is ever suspended — when, and the reason a moderator wrote.
Location
- The location you choose — a city you pick, a ZIP you search, or where your device says you are — is kept in a cookie for the visit (below) so the feed stays centered as you move between pages.
- Your device locationis read only when your browser asks you and you say yes. It centers the map and the feed and is resolved to the nearest town. It is not saved to your account, and posts never carry it: a deal or activity carries the business's location, never yours.
- What you type into a location or business search — and the map point it is biased to — goes through our server to the map providers named below, so they can answer it. They get the search, not your account.
Technical
Our hosting provider keeps ordinary server logs — IP address, browser, the pages requested and when — for a short time, as every host does. We keep short-lived counters per IP address in memory to stop searches and reports being hammered by a script. That is all: no analytics, no advertising pixels, no fingerprinting, no third-party trackers of any kind.
Who handles it for us
Town Regular is built on a few services, each of which sees only what its job needs and none of which may use it for anything else:
- Supabase — the database and the sign-in service. Everything in the sections above is stored there, on servers in the United States.
- Vercel — hosts the site and keeps the server logs described above.
- Resend — sends our email: sign-in codes, password resets, the notice when your address changes, and the copy of each report that reaches us.
- Geoapify and Photon (both built on OpenStreetMap) and Google Places — answer location and business searches. They receive the search text and the map point it is biased to, nothing about you.
- Cloudflare — routes mail sent to our addresses to the inbox we read it in.
We do not sell personal information, we do not share it for advertising, and there are no advertisers. Beyond the services above, we disclose information only if the law requires it or to protect someone from harm.
Email we send
Only about your account: a code to confirm your address, a password reset when you ask for one, a notice to your old address when your email changes, and replies to anything you send us. There is no newsletter. If a digest of local deals ever exists, it will be something you turn on, with a way to stop it in every message.
Who can see what
Everyone: your handle, what you post and comment, when you posted it, and your score. That is the board.
Nobody: your email, your name, your phone number and your home town are not displayed anywhere on the site, and neither is how you voted.
Moderators:the reports filed and who filed them, and each account's handle, role and standing, so they can act on the rules in the Terms. Nothing more.
How long we keep it
For as long as your account exists. When you delete a post or a comment it leaves the site at once; its row stays behind as an empty marker so the replies under it keep their place, and the text itself is erased rather than hidden. Deleting your account removes your sign-in, your name, phone number, home town and votes. Deals, activities and comments you posted stay on the board, shown as written by “[deleted account]” with nothing linking them to you — delete any you don't want left behind before you go.
Your choices
Your name, handle, email, password, phone number, home town and the use-my-location switch are all yours to change in Settings. Your browser controls whether the site may read your device location — you decide that prompt, and you can take it back in the browser's site settings. The display-mode cookie is overwritten when you switch Light/Dark and deleted by “Use my device settings”. The location cookie clears itself when you close your browser, and to change the location sooner you just pick another one in the app. All three can be cleared at any time in your browser's site settings.
To close your account, open Settings and press Delete account. It asks for your password again (or your display name, if you sign in with Google or Facebook), and the section above says what goes and what stays. A request to see, correct or delete what we hold about you — which US state privacy laws entitle you to — goes to [email protected]; we answer within 45 days.
Children
Town Regular is for people 13 and older, and we don't knowingly collect anything from anyone younger. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, tell us at the address above and we'll delete it.
Keeping it safe
Everything travels over HTTPS. Passwords are hashed by the sign-in service and screened against known-breached lists before they're accepted. Changing your email needs your current password and a code sent to the new address, and your old address is told it happened — so if it wasn't you, you find out. No system is perfect; if you think your account has been compromised, email [email protected] straight away.
US state privacy laws
Under US state privacy laws (including California's CCPA/CPRA and the laws of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, and others), the cookies here are strictly necessary and need no opt-in. Those laws also let you opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information and of targeted advertising — Town Regular does none of those, so there is nothing to opt out of, and browser signals like Global Privacy Control have nothing to act on here. The rights those laws give you to see, correct and delete your information are honored through the address above.
Changes
This page always holds the current version, and the date at the top says when it last changed. If we ever collect something new or hand data to someone new, we'll say so on the site rather than hope you re-read this page.
